Description
Background
- Historical and Modern Use: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), rooted in Ayurvedic medicine, is widely used for its potential benefits in stress reduction, improved sleep, anti-inflammatory effects, and muscle function — leading to its rise as a top-selling supplement.
- Active Ingredients and Mechanisms: Key compounds like withaferin-A, withanolides, and alkaloids modulate inflammatory pathways (e.g., NF-kB, STAT3), regulate cortisol via the HPA axis, enhance GABAergic activity for sleep, and support muscle growth by reducing oxidative stress and promoting glucose uptake.
- Benefits and Risks: Ashwagandha demonstrates significant reductions in stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbances, but may worsen hyperthyroidism and autoimmune conditions, highlighting the importance of understanding contraindications.
- Research Focus: Our study investigates college students’ awareness of Ashwagandha’s benefits and risks, using pre- and post-education surveys to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public perception.
