Description
Abstract
Second generation antipsychotics are generally preferred over first generation agents due to lower extrapyramidal symptom (EPS) risk. However, EPS remain clinically significant in pediatric populations. Adolescents may demonstrate increased susceptibility to adverse neuromotor effects, necessitating careful monitoring. In pediatric schizophrenia trials (ages 13-17), aripiprazole treated patients experienced higher rates of EPS compared to placebo (25% vs 7%), with a dose dependent relationship observed (higher rates at 30mg vs 10mg daily). We describe rapid onset EPS in adolescent after brief exposure to underscore the need for vigilant movement monitoring.
