Phantosmia in a Patient With Schizophrenia: A Case Raising Concern for Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
Repository
Description
Abstract
Schizophrenia is defined as a chronic psychiatric condition in which a person experiences “positive” symptoms (disorganized thoughts, delusions, hallucinations) and “negative” symptoms (flat affect, social withdrawal), often requiring the use of antipsychotics. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a epileptic condition, mostly associated with traumatic brain injuries, that presents with symptoms such as phantosmia. This is due to the focal involvement of structures in the temporal lobe, such as the hippocampus. Evidence has increasingly shown associations between TLE and psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, regarding hippocampal subcircuits.nThis poster analyzes a case of schizophrenia with symptoms suspicious for TLE and the appropriate steps that would have been taken afterwards to confirm or deny the presence of this condition.
