Description
Abstract
Childhood obesity is a growing problem, especially in California. In 2019, it was reported that 31% of children and teens aged 10-17 were either overweight or obese 1. In Madera County, more than 44% of children are obese or overweight 2. The current literature analyzing the effectiveness of Fruit and Vegetable Prescriptions programs have shown preliminary improvements in BMI, consumption of fruit and vegetable, and reduction in food insecurity in pediatric populations with obesity 3,4. Our research question asks, will receiving weekly produce boxes for six weeks effect the eating behavior, fruit and vegetable intake, and confidence in preparing food for families with overweight or obese children at Camarena Health? Our hypothesis is that families with children who are overweight or obese receiving weekly produce boxes with educational materials on food storage and preparation for six weeks will report increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables.
